Chapter 3 - The Secret Whisper

Two hours later, the suffocating Christmas party was finally winding down.

The family members had nervously accepted Elaine’s fabricated narrative, whispering quiet, pitying remarks about Ruth’s "rapidly declining mental state." Elaine played the role of the exhausted, devoted caretaker flawlessly, soaking up the sympathy of her wealthy relatives.

Nola stood in the grand foyer, pulling on her winter coat. Her mind was racing. Her grandmother had never shown a single sign of dementia. Ruth was the sharpest, most calculating woman Nola had ever known. The idea that she simply "forgot" what she placed in a sealed envelope was absolutely impossible.

Ruth was seated in a high-backed armchair near the front door, a silver rosary wound tightly around her trembling hand.

Nola walked over and bent down to kiss her grandmother's wrinkled cheek goodbye.

"Merry Christmas, Grandma," Nola whispered softly, preparing to pull away.

She couldn't.

Ruth’s hand suddenly shot out with terrifying, desperate strength. Her fingers clamped like a vice around Nola’s wrist, stopping the younger woman completely in her tracks.

Nola gasped, looking down into her grandmother’s eyes. There was no confusion. There was no dementia. There was only a fierce, urgent, and incredibly sharp lucidity.

An extreme close-up captured Ruth drawing Nola close enough so that their faces were merely inches apart.

"Come see me alone, sweetheart," Ruth whispered. It was a firm, intimate, and entirely desperate command. "Tomorrow morning. Before she wakes up."

Nola’s expression tightened into absolute titanium. She slowly nodded.

👉 Nola tried to step back, but a cold shadow falling over the doorway signaled that they were being watched.
