Chapter 1 - The Christmas Eve Abandonment

The luxury American high-rise apartment was completely silent, except for the ragged, congested breathing of a six-month-old baby.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, heavy snow fell over the glittering Chicago skyline. Inside, the living room was a picture of holiday perfection, anchored by a professionally decorated Christmas tree. But standing in the center of the room, Lauren’s life was completely falling apart.
Lauren, a thirty-two-year-old mother, was running on absolute fumes. Her brown hair was tied up in a messy, exhausted bun. She wore a stained burgundy sweatshirt and beige sweatpants. She was holding Noah, her infant son wearing a light blue onesie, bouncing him gently to soothe his 101-degree fever. Across the room, his twin sister Lily slept fitfully in a clear acrylic bassinet, wearing a soft peach onesie.
Lauren hadn’t slept in three days.
She turned her bloodshot eyes toward the front door. Standing there was her husband, Cole.
Cole was in his late thirties, impeccably groomed, wearing a sharp, tailored charcoal suit and gleaming silver cufflinks. He was checking his expensive watch, looking entirely unbothered by his son’s fever or his wife’s obvious, crushing exhaustion.
“Cole, please,” Lauren begged, her voice hoarse. “Noah’s fever spiked again. I can’t handle both of them alone tonight. It’s Christmas Eve.”
Cole didn't even look up from his phone. He adjusted his silk tie, projecting a cold, arrogant, and entirely dismissive aura.
“I have a critical client dinner, Lauren. It’s for the startup,” Cole said, his voice dripping with condescension. He reached for the brass doorknob. He didn't kiss her. He didn't check on the babies. He just looked back with a sneer.
“Lauren, this is what mothers do. Figure it out.”
