Chapter 6 - The Morning After

The sun rose brightly over the snow-covered streets of Chicago on Christmas morning.

Inside the lavish penthouse suite of the Four Seasons, Cole woke up stretching on high-thread-count sheets. Sierra was sleeping next to him, the twenty-thousand-dollar pearl necklace resting beautifully against her collarbone.

Cole smirked. He felt like a king. He had the perfect startup, the perfect mistress, and a naive wife sitting at home doing all the dirty work.

He rolled over and grabbed his phone from the nightstand.

He had fourteen missed calls. But they weren't from Lauren. They were from his Chief Financial Officer.

Frowning, Cole dialed the CFO back.

"Cole! Finally!" his CFO panicked on the other end of the line. "What the hell is going on? The bank just froze all of our operating accounts! The corporate credit cards are declining! They said the primary investor triggered an emergency asset freeze!"

Cole sat up straight, his heart hammering against his ribs. "What? That's impossible! I'm the CEO!"

"You're not the primary investor, Cole!" the CFO yelled. "Your wife’s trust is! And we just got a legal notice that you are being ousted from the board pending an investigation for embezzlement!"

Cole’s blood turned to absolute ice.

He hung up the phone. His hands were shaking. He quickly opened his banking app to check his personal joint account—the one holding the $100,000 he promised Sierra for her condo.

The balance was $0.00.

Sierra stirred awake, smiling sleepily at him. "Merry Christmas, baby. Are we going to sign the lease today?"
