Chapter 8 - The Phone Call

Cole was hyperventilating in the center of the lobby. High-society residents walking their dogs on Christmas morning stared at him standing next to a pile of garbage bags.
He pulled out his phone and frantically dialed Lauren’s number.
It rang four times. Finally, she answered.
"Lauren!" Cole screamed into the phone, completely losing his arrogant composure. "What the hell is going on?! The bank froze my accounts! The building won't let me up! Tell your crazy mother to call them off!"
"Merry Christmas, Cole," Lauren’s voice echoed through the speaker. She didn't sound exhausted anymore. She sounded like absolute, unbreakable steel.
"Stop playing games, Lauren!" Cole barked, his face red with panic. "Let me up right now!"
"You don't live here anymore," Lauren stated calmly. "And you don't own a company anymore. The seed contract you signed specifically stated that embezzlement and documented infidelity forfeit your shares. I took my company back."
Cole’s breath hitched in his throat. "Infidelity? You're insane! I was at a client dinner!"
"I read your iPad, Cole," Lauren replied, her voice dropping to a lethal, cinematic whisper. "I know about Sierra. I know about the condo. And I know about the pearl necklace you bought with my family's money."
Cole stumbled backward, his knees going weak. The lie was entirely destroyed.
