Chapter 9 - The Final Blow

"You didn't care about those babies last night," Lauren said, her voice completely devoid of human empathy. "Noah had a 101-degree fever. I hadn't slept in three days. And you told me to 'figure it out.'"
Cole wept into the phone, standing pathetically in the lavish lobby. "I was an idiot! I'll do anything! Please, let me come home!"
"I did figure it out, Cole," Lauren replied smoothly. "My lawyer will contact you on Monday. Do not come near me or my children again."
The line went dead.
Cole stared at the glowing screen of his phone in absolute, unadulterated despair.
Suddenly, the lobby doors spun open. Sierra walked in, shivering in the cold, holding her designer bag. She looked furious.
"Cole!" Sierra yelled, marching up to him. "The hotel manager just kicked me out! Your credit card on file declined! What is going on?!"
Cole looked at his twenty-four-year-old mistress. He looked at the trash bags holding his entire life.
"I... I lost everything," Cole choked out. "The company. The money. It's gone."
Sierra stared at him. She looked at his pathetic, crying face, then down at the garbage bags. The illusion of the powerful, wealthy CEO instantly vanished.
"You're broke?" Sierra asked, her voice dripping with pure disgust.
