Chapter 10 - The House of Light

With David locked behind bars, the divorce was finalized in a matter of weeks.
Because of his felony convictions, I was granted absolute full custody of Lily. The judge awarded me 100% of the assets, the bank accounts, and full ownership of the family home. David was left with absolutely nothing but a prison cell and a mountain of legal debt.
The very first thing I did was hire a massive construction crew. We completely ripped out the dark, heavy leather couch. We tore up the floorboards, destroyed the metal hatch, and filled the secret basement with solid concrete. No one would ever hide in the shadows of my home again.
I replaced the dark furniture with bright, colorful pieces. I opened all the blinds. I let the sunlight pour into every single room.
My brain fog completely lifted. Without the heavy sedatives David had been secretly slipping into my food, I felt energetic, sharp, and alive for the first time in years.
Mr. Henderson, our wonderful neighbor who had trusted his instincts that night, became like a grandfather to Lily. He came over for dinner every Sunday, and I never hesitated to express my endless gratitude for the man who helped me uncover the truth.

One evening, I was sitting in the brightly lit living room, watching Lily safely play with her toys on the new rug. I realized that the scariest night of my life had actually been my greatest blessing. The "snake" my daughter saw didn't ruin our lives—it set us free.
Do you think a twelve-year prison sentence was enough for what David tried to do to his family, or did he deserve much worse?
