Chapter 5 - The Hidden Lair

The officers didn't wait. With their flashlights cutting through the darkness and weapons raised, three cops descended the narrow, hidden staircase.

Standing on the driveway, the silence was agonizing. Every second felt like an hour. I clutched Lily so tightly my knuckles turned white. My heart hammered in my throat. I fully expected to hear gunshots. I fully expected a deranged stalker to come bursting out of the shadows.

Instead, I heard the heavy thud of a door being kicked open below ground.

“Drop it! Get on the ground right now!” an officer's voice echoed violently through the floorboards.

“Wait! Wait! This is my house!” a panicked, frantic voice screamed back.

My breath caught in my throat. I knew that voice. It was a voice I had heard every single day for the last eight years.

A moment later, heavy footsteps echoed up the wooden stairs. The officers emerged from the metal hatch, physically dragging a man by his arms. They slammed him face-first against my living room wall, violently kicking his legs apart to search him for weapons.

I walked slowly up the porch steps, stepping into the doorway. My brain completely short-circuited as I stared at the man in handcuffs.

It was David.

My husband. The man who was supposedly in Chicago at a massive corporate conference.

He was wearing gray sweatpants and a stained t-shirt, completely disheveled, sweating profusely. In his hands, an officer had just confiscated a high-tech remote controller with a small digital screen attached to it. He had been piloting the snake camera.

“David?” I gasped, my voice barely a whisper.

He whipped his head around, his eyes wide with panic. “Emily! Tell them to let me go! This is a misunderstanding! I was just testing a new security system!”
