Chapter 4 - The Sound Beneath the Floor

We stood on the freezing front porch, wrapped in thick blankets Mr. Henderson had grabbed from the hall closet. My mind was racing, spiraling into total panic.
If someone was inside my walls, how long had they been there? How did they install a metal hatch and a digital keypad without me noticing?
Then, the terrifying realization hit me. Six months ago, David had insisted I take Lily to visit my parents in Florida for two weeks because our house needed "urgent asbestos and mold remediation" in the basement. He had stayed behind to oversee the contractors. When we returned, the basement door had been permanently locked, and David claimed the area was sealed off for safety. He had bought the massive couch the very next day.
Within minutes, the flashing red and blue lights of two police cruisers illuminated the neighborhood. Four officers, guns drawn and flashlights blazing, sprinted up the driveway. Mr. Henderson quickly briefed them, flashing his retired badge to establish authority.
“Ma’am, I need you and your daughter to stay behind the cruisers,” the lead sergeant ordered, motioning for his men to enter the house.
I held Lily tightly against my chest, watching through the front window as the heavily armed officers surrounded the empty space where the couch used to be.
One of the officers pulled out a heavy steel crowbar. He wedged it firmly into the seam of the painted metal hatch. With a violent jerk, the metal groaned and popped open, revealing a pitch-black, narrow staircase leading directly down into the "sealed" basement.
“Police! Come out with your hands up!” the sergeant roared into the darkness.
