Chapter 2 - The Neighbor's Warning

Pure maternal instinct took over. I didn't scream. I didn't freeze. I scooped Lily up into my arms and bolted out the front door into the freezing night air.
I ran straight down the driveway, my bare feet stinging against the icy concrete. By sheer luck, our elderly neighbor, Mr. Henderson, a retired police detective who suffered from insomnia, was standing beneath the streetlight having a late-night cigarette.
“Mr. Henderson!” I gasped, clutching Lily to my chest. “There's something unusual in my living room! Something keeps shifting beneath our couch, and it isn't an animal!”
His expression instantly shifted from polite confusion to sharp, professional concern. He dropped his cigarette, crushed it beneath his boot, and hurried inside his house. He emerged seconds later holding a heavy-duty tactical flashlight.
“Stay close to your mother, sweetheart,” Mr. Henderson said softly to Lily as we walked back inside my house. He looked at me, his eyes dead serious. “Emily, could you show me exactly where?”
I pointed a trembling finger toward the massive leather sectional.
Mr. Henderson knelt down. The moment his powerful flashlight beam cut through the darkness underneath the couch, his entire body went rigid. He didn't speak for five agonizing seconds. The gentle concern on his face completely vanished, replaced by a grave, terrifying expression that sent an uncomfortable chill straight down my spine.
He straightened up slowly, examining the heavy piece of furniture.
“Emily,” Mr. Henderson said, his voice dropping to a tense whisper. “We need to shift this couch. Right now.”
“But David made me promise that I'd never move it…” I stammered, the fear of my husband's irrational anger bubbling up.

Mr. Henderson turned toward me and held my gaze. “After what you've discovered tonight, are you absolutely sure your husband has told you everything?”
