Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

“Gladly, ma'am,” the sergeant smiled, grabbing David by the collar.
“You can't do this to me, Emily!” David screamed hysterically as the officers dragged him out the front door in his dirty sweatpants. “I’m your husband! I own this house!”
“Not anymore,” I whispered, watching them shove him violently into the back of the police cruiser.
Chloe followed right behind him, sobbing and begging for mercy, completely humiliated as all the neighbors on the street stood on their lawns, watching the young mistress get hauled away in handcuffs and silk pajamas.
The next few months were a whirlwind of lawyers, courtrooms, and justice.
David’s arrogance completely crumbled when the District Attorney presented the hard drives recovered from the secret basement. The digital trail proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that David and Chloe had conspired to poison me and commit medical fraud.
During the sentencing, David cried openly in the courtroom, begging the judge for a lenient sentence. He claimed he was under "immense corporate stress" and made a mistake.
The judge wasn't having it.
“Your actions were not a mistake, Mr. Vance. They were a prolonged, calculated psychological torture of the mother of your child,” the judge stated coldly.
David was sentenced to twelve years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of early parole. Chloe, who tried to turn on David and play the victim, was slapped with a five-year sentence as an accomplice to wiretapping and conspiracy.
