Chapter 8 - The Slap Heard Around the Room

David realized the evidence was entirely stacked against him. His pathetic, pleading facade instantly vanished, replaced by the arrogant, cruel monster he truly was.
“She is crazy!” David suddenly shouted at the police, struggling against his cuffs. “Look at her! She’s hysterical! Those documents are just a precaution because she’s an unfit mother! The house is mine, the money is mine, and I’m protecting my daughter!”
Chloe, crying in the corner, immediately chimed in. “He’s right! She’s dangerous! We were just monitoring her to keep the child safe!”
For eight years, I had been the quiet, submissive wife. I had always bowed my head and apologized when David raised his voice. I had let him dictate where I went, what I wore, and whether or not I was allowed to move a couch.
But looking at this pathetic man, trying to steal my daughter and my sanity, something inside me completely snapped.
I didn't cry. I didn't shake. I walked straight up to David.
SMACK.
I slapped him across the face with so much force that a sickening crack echoed through the living room. David’s head whipped to the side, a bright red mark instantly blooming across his cheek. The police officers didn't even try to stop me. They just looked away.
“You are a pathetic, disgusting coward,” I said, my voice dangerously calm and laced with pure venom. “You thought I was weak. But the only reason you hid in the walls like a rat is because you were terrified of me finding out the truth.”

I turned to the sergeant. “I want to press every single charge possible. Wiretapping, conspiracy, poisoning, and child endangerment. Lock them both up.”
