Chapter 2 - The Free Nanny

The silence in the dining room was deafening.
"Let me get this straight," Megan whispered, her voice dangerously calm. "You accepted a job in Denver, Colorado. And your brilliant plan for your six-year-old and four-year-old children is to simply leave them in my guest room?"
"It’s an incredible opportunity, Megan," Kelsey scoffed, crossing her arms defensively in her burgundy hoodie. "I need to find myself. I’m overwhelmed. Grant said you guys have plenty of space, and since you already do the school drop-offs for Toby, adding Ruby and Finn to your morning routine is literally no extra work."
Megan stared at the entitled woman in absolute disgust.
She worked a demanding, fifty-hour-a-week corporate job. She was already exhausted maintaining the house and raising Toby while Grant coasted through his mediocre career.
"I am not a free nanny," Megan stated clinically. "You cannot abandon your children here."
"They are my niece and nephew, Megan!" Grant suddenly snapped, trying to project a pathetic, false authority. "Family helps family! Kelsey needs this fresh start. It’s only for a year. I already told her we would do it, so you need to just accept it and support my sister."
Megan looked at her husband. He was a coward who couldn't even look her in the eye while he actively ruined their family dynamic. He had volunteered her time, her energy, and her sanity without a single conversation.
She didn't throw her spaghetti. She didn't burst into hysterical tears.

Megan simply stood up from the wooden table, wiped her mouth with her napkin, and walked directly out of the dining room.
👉 Megan walked upstairs to her husband's home office, preparing to uncover a secret that was infinitely worse than free babysitting.
