Chapter 8 - The Financial Guillotine

Kelsey grinned, assuming her "pushover" sister-in-law had guiltily provided some extra spending cash for her new life.

She ripped open the envelope and pulled out the single sheet of paper.

It wasn't cash. It was an official, stamped letter from the bank’s primary fraud investigation department.

Kelsey’s arrogant smile violently vanished. Her face turned the color of wet ash as she read the bold red text at the top of the page.

“WIRE TRANSFER REVERSED: PENDING FELONY FRAUD INVESTIGATION.”

"What is this?" Kelsey panicked, her voice shrill and breathless. She looked wildly at Grant. "Grant! The forty thousand dollars didn't clear! The title company in Denver just texted me! Rick is going to cancel the condo!"

Grant physically staggered backward, dropping his car keys onto the hardwood floor. He stared at Megan in absolute, world-shattering horror.

"I went to the bank on Thursday," Megan explained clinically, her voice a cold, lethal blade. "I showed them the forged guardianship papers you notarized, Grant. They instantly flagged your account for domestic financial fraud. The wire transfer was completely reversed, and the money was secured back into a private trust under Toby's name."

"You selfish witch!" Grant roared hysterically, lunging toward the kitchen island. "That was her money! You just ruined her relationship!"

"I protected my son's college fund," Megan corrected ruthlessly, entirely immune to his pathetic outburst.

👉 Kelsey screamed that she was leaving anyway, but the heavy knock at the front door completely sealed her doom.
