Chapter 5 - The Forged Signature

Megan clicked the PDF icon.

The document on the screen was a formal, state-certified "Declaration of Permanent Guardianship."

In order to legally enroll Ruby and Finn in the local suburban school district, and to add them to Megan’s premium corporate health insurance policy, Grant had to submit sworn legal affidavits to the county.

Megan scrolled to the bottom of the third page.

There, sitting cleanly on the digital signature line, was her own name. But Megan had never seen this document in her life. Grant had flawlessly forged her signature, legally binding Megan to provide full financial and medical support for Kelsey’s abandoned children until they turned eighteen.

To make matters infinitely worse, the document was stamped by a notary public—Grant’s sleazy college friend who worked at a local bank.

Grant hadn't just lied at the dinner table. He had committed a massive, undeniable felony. He had committed aggravated identity theft and legal fraud to chain his wife to his sister’s responsibilities.

Megan lowered the iPad. The betrayal was so deep, so absolute, that all the warmth completely evaporated from her soul.

She didn't wake him up to scream at him. She didn't pack a bag and run away.
