Chapter 9 - The Police Arrival

"I don't care!" Kelsey shrieked, completely abandoning her maternal facade. She grabbed the handles of her massive suitcases. "I'm going to Denver anyway! Rick will just have to pay for it! I am not staying in this miserable state with those kids!"
Before Kelsey could pull her suitcases to the door, a violently loud, aggressive pounding echoed through the house.
Grant froze. He slowly reached out and opened the heavy mahogany front door.
Standing on the porch were two heavily armed, uniformed city police officers. Standing perfectly still directly behind them, holding a thick blue legal folder, was David.
Kelsey let out a high-pitched, horrified gasp, retreating against the wall as if she had just seen a ghost.
"David?" Kelsey stammered, her hands shaking violently. "What are you doing here? You aren't allowed near me!"
"The restraining order was officially vacated yesterday, Kelsey," David stated coldly, stepping flawlessly into the foyer. He looked at the suitcases, then at the two confused children on the rug. "When Megan provided the judge with your text messages explicitly detailing your plan to abandon our children, he granted me full, immediate emergency custody."
"That's a lie!" Grant panicked, trying to block the police officers. "We are their legal guardians! I have the paperwork!"
