At 1:00 AM, Megan slipped into the guest bathroom and dialed a number she hadn't called in three years.

"The kids are fine," Megan assured him. "But Kelsey is boarding a flight to Denver on Saturday morning. She is permanently abandoning Ruby and Finn at my house to move in with a new boyfriend. Grant forged legal guardianship papers to hide them from the state."

David stopped breathing on the other end of the line. For three years, he had been fighting a brutal, expensive legal battle in family court to prove Kelsey was an unfit, neglectful mother.
