Chapter 3 - The Broken Vows

To understand the absolute, unhinged arrogance of the Vance family, one had to look at the meticulously hidden reality of their marriage.

Arthur was the golden heir to a supposedly massive real estate empire. When he married Ms. Sterling three years ago, he demanded she quit her corporate job, sign a brutal prenuptial agreement, and completely submit to his wealthy, high-society family's every whim.

For three years, she had played the role of the quiet, obedient trophy wife. She endured Eleanor’s constant, vicious insults about her "lower-class" background. She endured Chloe treating her like a glorified servant.

And she endured Arthur’s escalating, terrifying need for control.

This morning, the boiling point was reached over a simple cup of coffee. Ms. Sterling had accidentally bumped into Arthur while bringing him his mug, spilling a few drops onto his tailored navy suit jacket.

For Arthur, a spilled drop of coffee was a catastrophic insult to his authority. The slap was meant to break her spirit permanently.

But as Ms. Sterling sat on the cold marble floor, the terrified, submissive wife completely evaporated.
