"Your father went completely, irreversibly bankrupt five years ago, Chloe," Ms. Sterling stated smoothly.
The patriarch of the family, sitting behind Eleanor, violently dropped his morning newspaper. All the color instantly drained from his face, leaving him looking like a terrified ghost.
"Shut up!" the father roared, standing up so fast his chair tipped backward.
"Arthur knew," Ms. Sterling continued ruthlessly, her dark eyes locking onto her husband's pale, shocked face. "He knew the bank was foreclosing on this estate. He knew your entire real estate empire was drowning in eighty million dollars of hidden corporate debt."
Eleanor gripped her pearl necklace, her hands shaking violently. "That's a lie!"
"When Arthur forced me to sign that brutal prenuptial agreement three years ago, I didn't just sign my name," Ms. Sterling whispered, stepping closer to Arthur. "I hired a forensic accounting firm to look into the Vance Family Trust. I found out you were all completely insolvent."
"Why did you marry him then?!" Chloe shrieked hysterically, completely abandoning her smug, entitled persona.
