Chapter 1 - The Bridal Suite

The luxurious bridal suite was completely silent, except for the soft hum of the air conditioning. The expensive hardwood floor gleamed under the warm, amber glow of a bedside lamp. It was supposed to be the happiest day of Clara’s life. She was a beautiful bride in her twenties, wearing a flawless white lace wedding gown and a delicate veil.
But Clara wasn't standing at the altar. She was curled into a tight ball underneath the massive king-sized bed, physically trembling in absolute, suffocating terror.
Just inches above her head, sitting casually on the edge of the mattress, was Beatrice.
Beatrice was Clara’s mother-in-law—a wealthy, highly manipulative woman in her fifties. She wore an elegant dark lace evening gown, her blonde hair pinned perfectly into a high-society updo. She took a long, slow drag from her cigarette, blowing the smoke casually toward the ceiling. In her other hand, she held her cell phone tightly against her ear.
"Is the condo under her name yet?" Beatrice demanded into the phone, her voice dripping with cold, calculating venom.
A cinematic close-up captured Clara hiding under the heavy bed frame. She violently covered her mouth with her trembling hand, desperately trying to stifle her own heartbroken sobs. Tears streamed down her pale cheeks.
In her other hand, Clara held her own cell phone. The screen was illuminated.
