Chapter 4 - The Counter-Attack

Clara walked over to the full-length mirror in the corner of the bridal suite. She adjusted her veil perfectly. She looked like a flawless, innocent bride.

She unlocked her phone and didn't call the police. The police would take too long, and Beatrice’s expensive corporate lawyers would bury the recording in endless litigation. Clara wanted absolute, immediate, and utterly devastating justice.

She opened her email app and composed a new message.

She attached the audio recording.

Then, she typed in the email addresses of the three most powerful people sitting in the front row of the wedding audience.

The first was the CEO of the massive real estate firm that owned the three-million-dollar condo. The second was the head underwriter at the bank funding the fraudulent mortgage. The third was the lead investigator for the IRS financial crimes division—a man who happened to be Mark's estranged, highly ethical uncle.

She didn't send the email yet. She saved it to her drafts.

Suddenly, the heavy wooden door of the suite swung open.

Mark, her handsome fiancé, walked in wearing a tailored black tuxedo. He smiled warmly, looking like the perfect, loving groom.

"Hey, beautiful," Mark whispered, walking over and gently kissing her cheek. "The guests are all seated. Are you ready to do this?"

Clara looked directly into the eyes of the man who was planning to completely bankrupt her and discard her in six months.

"I have never been more ready for anything in my entire life," Clara replied smoothly, offering a cold, cinematic smile.
