Chapter 7 - The VIP Reaction

"It's not fake, Beatrice."
A deep, booming voice echoed from the front row.
The CEO of the real estate firm stood up, his face flushed red with unadulterated fury. He held his cell phone in his hand, staring directly at the email Clara had just sent him, which included not just the audio, but screenshots of the fraudulent signature transfers.
"You used my company to facilitate massive federal mortgage fraud," the CEO growled, glaring at the panicked mother-in-law.
Next to him, the bank underwriter stood up, equally furious. "The mortgage application is officially terminated. And my legal department is pressing charges for identity theft."
Mark hyperventilated at the altar. His entire multi-million-dollar conspiracy was violently collapsing into dust in front of the city's elite. He realized he was completely, irreversibly ruined.
"Clara, please!" Mark begged pathetically, reaching his hands out toward his bride. "My mother forced me to do it! We were broke! I still love you! We can fix this!"
Clara looked at the man she had almost married. She felt absolutely no human empathy for the monster standing in front of her.
"You didn't love me, Mark," Clara stated flawlessly, her voice echoing through his microphone. "You loved my credit score."
Beatrice realized she was completely, inescapably trapped. The arrogant, wealthy matriarch was gone, replaced by a desperate, cornered coward.
