Chapter 2 - The Hidden Conspiracy

"No, listen to me," Beatrice hissed into her phone, taking another drag of her cigarette. "The mortgage papers need to be finalized today. Before she walks down that aisle."
Clara stopped breathing entirely. The dust bunnies under the bed seemed to close in on her as she strained to hear the rest of the conversation.
"My idiot son actually convinced her to sign the blank asset transfer forms last night," Beatrice laughed—a dark, cruel sound that made Clara’s blood run completely ice-cold. "She thinks it was just standard prenuptial paperwork to protect her small savings. She has absolutely no idea she just authorized us to purchase a three-million-dollar luxury condo using her social security number and her pristine credit score."
The cinematic realization hit Clara with the force of a nuclear bomb.
She wasn't marrying into a loving, wealthy family. She was being used as a financial human shield.
Clara was a hardworking pediatric nurse with flawless credit, but no real wealth. Her fiancé, Mark, came from "old money," or so she thought. But Beatrice’s phone call just revealed the horrifying truth. The family was drowning in massive, unpayable debt.
"As soon as the condo is under Clara's name," Beatrice commanded smoothly, completely devoid of human empathy, "we use it as collateral to secure the loan to pay off my offshore creditors. When the bank forecloses in six months, Clara takes the total financial hit. We walk away completely clean, and Mark divorces her."
A tight close-up captured Beatrice looking down at the hardwood floor, her eyes completely dead.
