Chapter 2 - The Price of Silence

The sheer cruelty of her father's words hit Claire harder than the fist that had shattered her cheekbone just two hours earlier. She gasped, taking a stumbling step backward into the foyer.

Across the room, her mother stood near the towering, glittering Christmas tree. Her immaculate blonde bob didn't have a single hair out of place. She smoothed down the front of her expensive cream silk blouse and sighed heavily, looking at Claire not with pity, but with profound annoyance.

"Stop being so dramatic, Claire," her mother scolded, walking over to the dining table. She tapped her manicured fingernail aggressively against a thick stack of legal documents resting next to the holiday centerpiece. "Come sit down and sign these. We’ve already spoken to Mark’s lawyers."

Claire stared at the papers. They were Non-Disclosure Agreements and a formal retraction of the frantic 911 call she had made from her bathroom floor. Mark, her incredibly wealthy, influential husband, had beaten her because she packed a suitcase to leave him.

"You want me to sign a retraction?" Claire whispered, her voice shaking with absolute horror. "He almost killed me tonight, Mom. He told me he was going to snap my neck in front of Emily."

Her mother rolled her eyes, pointing sharply at the legal papers again. "Think about what this does to everybody, Claire! Mark is about to be named CEO of the firm. A domestic violence scandal right now would ruin him!"
