Chapter 8 - The Hidden Camera

"You little bitch!" her father roared. The sophisticated facade completely vanished, replaced by sheer, desperate rage. He lunged across the table, knocking over a crystal wine glass. "You can't do this! We are your parents!"

"You're nothing to me," Claire stated, not taking a single step back.

Her mother began to hyperventilate, clutching the cream blouse. "Claire, please! If Mark finds out you froze his assets, he’ll kill us! He’ll kill you! You have to undo this! We covered for him! We told him we’d handle you!"

Claire’s bruised lips curled into a slow, dark, victorious smile. "I know you covered for him, Mom. And I’m so glad you just admitted it."

Claire reached up with her right hand and tapped a small, sparkling silver broach pinned to the lapel of her dark winter coat. It wasn't jewelry. It was a high-definition recording device.

"I've been live-streaming this entire conversation directly to the local precinct," Claire whispered, her eyes burning with righteous fury. "The police heard Mark beat me on the 911 call. But they just heard both of you admit to extortion, tampering with a victim, and conspiracy to cover up felony domestic violence."

The silence that followed was absolute. Her father stared at the small silver broach, his mouth opening and closing silently like a suffocating fish. Her mother let out a high-pitched wail and collapsed to her knees on the expensive rug.
