Chapter 5 - The Breaking Point

For thirty-two years, Claire had bent over backward to please these people. She had married the man they approved of. She had worn the dresses they liked. She had kept the secrets they demanded her to keep.

But as she stood bleeding in the doorway, feeling the fragile, shaking weight of her daughter in her arms, something inside Claire finally snapped. The terrified, submissive wife and the desperate, people-pleasing daughter died in that very moment.

She realized that the people in this room were not her family. They were parasites. And if she signed those papers, Emily would grow up learning that a woman’s safety was worth less than a country club membership. Emily would grow up thinking it was okay for a man to hit her, as long as he bought her parents a nice house.

Claire stopped crying. The tears drying on her bruised cheeks felt like ice. Her posture straightened, and the trembling in her hands completely vanished.

"You're right," Claire said, her voice eerily calm and flat. It was so devoid of emotion that her father actually blinked in surprise. "I shouldn't ruin everything over a misunderstanding."

Her mother let out a massive sigh of relief, clutching her chest. "Oh, thank God. You always were sensible when you calmed down, Claire. Come, just sign on the dotted line, and this ugly business is over."
