Chapter 7 - The Inheritance

Her father reached out hesitantly, pulling Claire’s papers closer to the light of the chandelier. The moment his eyes scanned the bold legal header, all the color drained from his face. He collapsed back into his chair as if he had been physically struck.

"What?" her mother demanded, rushing over and snatching the papers from his hands. "What is it?"

Her mother read the words aloud, her voice trembling. "Notice of Immediate Foreclosure and Asset Seizure... Estate of the late Margaret Vance."

The grandparents froze, staring at Claire in absolute terror.

Margaret Vance was Claire's biological grandmother. When she died ten years ago, she had left a massive, ironclad trust fund exclusively to Claire. But Claire’s father and Mark had secretly colluded to drain that trust, using a legal loophole to illegally transfer the funds to purchase this estate and fund Mark’s startup firm. They thought Claire was too naive to ever check the financials.

"I visited my lawyer three days ago," Claire said coldly, staring down at the people who had sold her soul. "I found out about the embezzlement. I found out you and Mark stole twelve million dollars from my inheritance to buy this house and secure his CEO position."

Her father began to stutter, panic sweating through his burgundy sweater. "Claire... sweetheart, we can explain..."

"The estate is being seized," Claire interrupted, her voice like a whip. "The accounts are already frozen. You don't own this house anymore. I do. And I'm selling it to the bank tomorrow."
