Chapter 6 - The Pen and the Paper

Claire walked slowly toward the mahogany table. Each step of her black boots echoed heavily against the hardwood floor. She didn't put Emily down. She held her daughter securely on her left hip, projecting an aura of absolute, unshakable protection.
She stopped in front of the table. Her father smiled—a sickening, victorious smile—and slid the stack of legal papers and the gold fountain pen toward her.
Claire looked down at the documents. The Non-Disclosure Agreement. The police retraction. The promise of silence in exchange for blood money.
She picked up the gold pen.
Her mother clapped her hands together softly. "Good girl. We can have a nice hot dinner after this."
But Claire didn't uncap the pen. Instead, she tossed it casually over her shoulder. It clattered loudly against the stone fireplace. Then, with her free right hand, she reached deep into the inside pocket of her dark winter coat.
She pulled out a separate, neatly folded stack of documents and dropped them squarely on top of Mark’s NDA.
"I'm not signing your papers," Claire said, her voice ringing out with chilling authority. "But you're going to want to read mine."
Her father frowned, his smug expression faltering. "What is this nonsense, Claire? Stop playing games."
