Chapter 9 - The Cold Winter

Faintly, over the howling Chicago wind outside, the piercing sound of police sirens began to echo down the long, private driveway of the estate. Red and blue lights started to flash through the frosted window panes, painting the beautifully decorated dining room in the colors of justice.
"Claire, wait! Please!" her father begged, his voice cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched whine as he scrambled around the table. "We’re your family! Don't let them take us!"
Claire didn't even look at him. She turned her back on her parents, holding Emily tightly against her chest. The little girl finally lifted her head, looking at the flashing police lights outside, no longer crying.
"Don't look at them, baby," Claire whispered into Emily's hair. "We're going home."
Claire walked steadily toward the grand foyer, leaving the NDA and the fake retraction torn to pieces on the floor. Her mother crawled after her, sobbing hysterically and reaching out for the hem of Claire’s dark coat.
"Claire! Don't leave us!" her mother screamed over the approaching sirens.
Claire stopped at the snowy doorway. She didn't turn around. She simply looked over her shoulder, the purple bruise on her face now looking like a badge of survival rather than a mark of defeat.
