Chapter 1 - The Smashed Plate

The heavy porcelain plate hit the polished marble floor with a violent, deafening crash. Dark red marinara sauce exploded upward, splashing across my beige pumps and staining the hem of my simple department-store dress.

The string quartet playing softly by the grand staircase abruptly stopped. The ambient chatter of fifty wealthy relatives and high-society guests completely evaporated. Everyone turned their heads, their eyes locking onto me standing in the center of the luxurious ballroom, hungry, covered in food, and profoundly humiliated.

Standing exactly two feet in front of me was my younger sister, Claire. She wore a breathtaking, custom-made silver gown, dripping in diamonds. She wasn't horrified by the accident. She was smiling. It was a cold, calculated, and malicious smirk.

“If you weren’t the one paying for the catering, you wouldn’t have been invited at all,” Claire announced, her voice echoing loudly across the silent room so every single guest could hear her cruelty. “Now get on your knees and clean that up, Ivy. You’re always so good at fixing everyone else’s messes.”

I looked past her, desperately seeking help. Sitting at the head VIP table were my parents.

My mother didn't gasp. She lifted her crystal champagne flute to her lips to hide a cruel, mocking laugh. My father simply frowned, leaning back in his gold chair. He didn't reprimand his youngest daughter for throwing food at me. He looked at me with deep annoyance.

“Don’t make a scene, Ivy,” Dad scolded, his voice dripping with condescension. “Your sister is having an incredibly important night. Just grab a napkin and wipe it up.”

I stood completely frozen, staring at the shattered porcelain at my feet.

👉 My family thought I was just going to lower my head and scrub the floor, but they didn't know about the text message waiting on my phone.
