Chapter 2 - The Sturdy Washing Machine

To understand the absolute, volcanic betrayal burning inside my chest, you had to understand exactly what this party was.

It was our family’s annual celebration at Meadowgate, a breathtakingly restored country estate where a single weekend rental cost more than most people earned in a year. The ballroom was a cinematic masterpiece of wealth. Thousands of imported white roses spilled from crystal vases. Waiters in crisp black tuxedos circulated with silver trays of champagne.

And I had paid for absolutely all of it.

I had quietly written the $26,400 check to cover the catering, the flowers, and the staff. But no one in the room knew that. Claire had spent the entire evening bragging that her luxury event-planning company had funded the gala. My father had spent the last two hours parading Claire around the room, loudly calling her a "visionary" and a "titan of industry."

When they introduced me to the wealthy investors, my mother called me "reliable." She said it with the exact same tone someone uses to describe a sturdy, boring washing machine. I was thirty-four, unmarried, and completely discarded by the people who were supposed to love me.

"What did I do?" I asked quietly, my voice trembling as the marinara sauce dripped from my shoes.

Claire stepped forward, casually nudging a sharp piece of my broken plate with her expensive silver heel.

"You asked my caterer why the vendor invoices were being sent directly to your accounting office," Claire hissed under her breath, her eyes flashing with venom. "It makes me look weak. It’s embarrassing. Tonight is about my massive corporate expansion, Ivy, not your pathetic little bookkeeping questions."

👉 Claire thought I was just a jealous accountant trying to ruin her spotlight, but she had completely forgotten who owned the ground she was standing on.
