Chapter 6 - The Fraudulent Collateral

"Mrs. Gable, we are so honored you could join us," Claire beamed, completely oblivious to the lethal tension radiating from the bank executive. "Do we have the final paperwork ready for the photos?"
Mrs. Gable didn't reach for a ceremonial check. She looked at Claire with absolute, freezing, professional disgust.
"There will be no photos, Ms. Harper," Mrs. Gable stated loudly, her voice projecting clearly across the dead-silent ballroom without the need for a microphone. "And there will be no funding. As of eight o'clock tonight, the bank has officially denied your six-hundred-thousand-dollar credit facility. The loan is entirely dead."
The collective gasp from the fifty wealthy guests sucked all the oxygen out of the room.
Claire’s flawless smile violently collapsed. The microphone let out a sharp, painful screech of feedback as her manicured hand squeezed the stand in sheer panic.
"What?" Claire stammered, the arrogant socialite instantly morphing into a terrified, confused child. "That... that's impossible! I passed the underwriting! My parents signed the paperwork to pledge Meadowgate as the collateral! The equity in this estate is worth four million dollars!"
My father stepped out from behind the VIP table, his face flushed with panicked anger. "Listen here, Mrs. Gable! I don't know what kind of game your bank is playing, but my wife and I authorized the lien on this property! The collateral is perfectly sound!"
Mrs. Gable slowly opened her pristine leather folder. She pulled out a single, heavily stamped legal document.
