Chapter 5 - The Uninvited Guests

BONG. BONG. BONG.

The antique grandfather clock against the wall began to chime loudly, striking exactly 8:00 PM.

Before the applause for Claire could completely die down, the massive, heavy oak double doors at the entrance of the grand ballroom swung open with a violent, authoritative thud.

The cinematic tension instantly spiked. The guests near the back of the room instinctively parted like the Red Sea.

Marching down the center aisle was Daniel Mercer. My attorney was a ruthless, sixty-year-old veteran of corporate law, wearing a flawless charcoal suit and carrying a thick black leather briefcase. Walking directly beside him was a stern woman in a navy blazer. I recognized her immediately. It was Mrs. Gable, the Senior Vice President of Commercial Lending at the city's largest bank.

Claire’s eyes lit up. She had been expecting the bank executive to arrive to formally hand her the ceremonial oversized check for the photographs.

"Ah! Perfect timing!" Claire announced into the microphone, gesturing grandly toward the approaching pair. "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Mrs. Gable, who is here to officially finalize the funding for my company's expansion!"

My parents stood up, clapping enthusiastically, eager to shake hands with the woman bringing them six hundred thousand dollars.

But Mrs. Gable didn't smile. She didn't wave to the crowd. She walked with a cold, terrifying rigidity, stopping exactly ten feet away from the microphone. Daniel Mercer stood silently beside her, his intense eyes sweeping the room before locking onto me with a brief, respectful nod.

👉 Claire reached out her hand to accept her massive fortune, but the banker's first words would instantly freeze the blood in her veins.
