Chapter 4 - The Declined Card

Back in the bright, tropical lobby, Trevor was busy taking selfies with her beige designer handbag, completely oblivious to the financial avalanche heading straight for her.

Corey wiped a nervous sweat from his brow, hoping the awkward interaction with his mother was over.

Suddenly, a new resort employee in a crisp uniform walked up to the marble reception counter. He looked at his computer screen, then looked up at Trevor with a highly professional, entirely unbothered expression.

"Excuse me, ma'am," the employee said calmly. "There seems to be an issue with the pre-authorization on the card provided for these suites."

Trevor rolled her eyes, pushing her sunglasses up into her voluminous golden-blonde hair. "Don't be ridiculous. It's a platinum card. Just run it again. Corey handled the booking."

"I have run it twice, ma'am," the employee stated professionally, his voice carrying over the quiet lobby. "I'm sorry. Your payment was declined. The total balance due for the three penthouse suites is fifty-four thousand dollars. Until a valid payment is secured, your room access has been suspended."

Trevor froze. The smug, arrogant smile violently slid off her face.

"Fifty-four thousand?!" Callie gasped, her beautiful features twisting in shock as she grabbed Corey's arm. "Corey, you said everything was fully paid for!"

Corey’s face turned the color of wet chalk. He frantically pulled out his own credit card, but his hands were shaking so badly he dropped it on the marble floor. He knew his cards would instantly decline a charge that massive. His secret was unraveling in real-time.

Trevor’s face turned crimson with unadulterated fury. She slammed her declined room key card onto the counter.
