Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

Corey couldn't take it anymore. The facade was dead. He pushed his way through the crowd, rushing right up to the edge of the wooden platform.
"Mom! Please!" Corey begged, his voice cracking with pure, desperate panic, completely exposing his true relationship to the Managing Director in front of Callie’s entire family. "I'm sorry! I should have defended you! Just fix the payment! Please!"
Callie let out a horrified shriek. "MOM?! She's your mother?!"
Callie spun around, glaring furiously at her husband. "You told me your mother was a retired nobody! You told me you paid for this trip in cash! You’re completely broke, aren't you?!"
Corey frantically tried to grab Callie’s hands, but she violently slapped him away, her white summer dress swirling as she backed into her terrified family members.
Evelyn looked down at her son from the stage. She felt a twinge of maternal sadness, but her composed, powerful dignity remained unbroken. She wasn't going to let anyone, not even her own flesh and blood, disrespect her in her own kingdom.
"I did fix the payment, Corey," Evelyn said quietly, stepping away from the microphone so only he could hear. "I removed the charity you so clearly take for granted. You are a grown man. If you want to stay in my penthouses, you will pay the fifty-four thousand dollars. If not, you will leave my property."
