Chapter 1 - The USB June Raised From the Floor

Elara was already crying when June Keller reached the nursery doorway.

The upscale room looked almost peaceful beneath the warm chandelier light.

Cream walls.

Dark wood flooring.

A gold metal crib with white bedding.

A wooden clothing rack beside the wall.

And one small black security camera mounted high above the doorway.

Then June saw Meredith Shaw standing over the crib.

An electric iron was in her hand.

Before June could even shout, Meredith pressed the hot iron against Elara’s tiny hand.

SIZZLE.

The ten-month-old baby screamed.

It was a sound June would hear in her sleep for months.

“NO!”

June ran.

She drove one hard kick into Meredith’s arm.

The iron flew sideways.

It struck the wall hard enough to crack the plaster, dropped to the floor, and landed on a white towel.

The towel immediately began to smolder.

Meredith stumbled backward.

Instead of looking horrified by what she had done, she glared at the screaming baby.

“SHE NEEDS TO LEARN.”

June shoved past her.

She reached into the gold crib and scooped Elara up against her chest.

The baby’s pale-blue pajamas trembled against June’s blouse.

Then June saw Elara’s hand.

Freshly burned.

Red.

Painful.

Elara cried weakly now, the powerful scream fading into frightening little sounds.

Then her body went limp against June’s shoulder from shock and exhaustion.

“Oh my God—Elara!”

June turned toward the door.

She needed help.

She needed water.

She needed Caleb.

Instead Meredith stepped into her path.

SLAP.

Her open palm struck June hard across the face.

June stumbled sideways but never released Elara.

At that exact moment, the nursery door swung open.

Caleb Whitcomb rushed inside.

Tall.

Dark-haired.

Still wearing the navy business suit he had returned home in.

He froze.

The room told him only fragments.

Burning towel.

Iron on the floor.

His daughter crying weakly in June’s arms.

June’s face reddened from the slap.

Meredith standing nearby.

And Meredith understood before anyone else that whoever explained first would control the next five seconds.

Her entire expression transformed.

The cruelty vanished.

Fake panic replaced it.

She pointed at June.

“SHE SNAPPED—SHE HURT THE BABY!”

Caleb did not stop to think.

He saw Elara’s injured hand.

Saw his child weak in June’s arms.

And believed the wrong person.

He stormed forward.

Ripped Elara from June’s embrace.

“What did you do?!”

June barely had time to open her mouth.

Caleb held Elara tightly with one arm.

Then kicked June hard in the stomach.

THUD.

June flew backward into the wooden clothing rack.

It broke beneath her weight.

Wooden rails and tiny clothes collapsed around her.

No second kick came.

Meredith stood behind Caleb.

Watching.

Silent.

For half a second, satisfaction flickered across her face.

June saw it.

Pain twisted through her stomach as she lay among the broken rack pieces.

But she forced one trembling hand beneath her blouse.

Meredith’s expression changed instantly.

June pulled out a small USB drive.

Raised it.

“WATCH THIS FIRST.”

Caleb froze.

Elara remained in his arms.

Meredith’s face drained completely white.

And that reaction finally made Caleb look at her.

Not June.

Meredith.

Because June had been kicked to the floor and was still trying to show him evidence.

But Meredith looked as though the tiny USB drive could destroy her life.
