Chapter 11 - June Refused to Come Back as If Nothing Happened
Caleb assumed June would leave permanently.
She nearly did.
After doctors cleared Elara to go home, June packed her room.
Caleb found two suitcases beside the staircase.
“You’re leaving.”
“Yes.”
He did not ask her to stay immediately.
He had learned enough to understand that wanting her back did not give him the right to pressure her.
“Can I ask one thing?”
June waited.
“Will you stay in Elara’s life somehow?”
Her eyes filled.
“That depends.”
“On what?”
“Whether you actually change.”
Fair.
June had worked inside a house where Meredith slowly manipulated everyone.
But Caleb had made that manipulation effective by reacting instead of listening.
June told him plainly:
“I can forgive panic someday. I cannot work for a man who sees an accusation and turns violent before he asks what happened.”
Caleb nodded.
“What would change look like?”
June seemed surprised he asked.
Then she answered.
“Emergency training.”
“Okay.”
“Clear camera access logs.”
“Okay.”
“No relative gets unrestricted childcare authority because they’re family.”
“Okay.”
“And you go to therapy.”
That one made him pause.
June raised an eyebrow.
Caleb exhaled.
“Okay.”
She did not return as live-in nanny.
Not yet.
For the next three months, she visited Elara twice a week while another vetted caregiver handled the daily schedule.
Trust, June made clear, would not be rebuilt by employment paperwork.
