Chapter 2 - Meredith Was Not Just a Woman Staying in the House

Meredith Shaw was family.

Caleb’s late wife Hannah had been her younger sister.

That made Meredith Elara’s maternal aunt.

For the first few months after Hannah died, Caleb had been grateful for her.

Hannah died when Elara was four months old after a sudden medical complication unrelated to childbirth. One morning Caleb had a wife and infant daughter.

Three days later he had only the baby.

Meredith came immediately.

She brought groceries.

Handled condolence calls.

Packed Hannah’s hospital things because Caleb could not bring himself to touch them.

She stayed in the guest room.

Then stayed another week.

Then another month.

Nobody questioned it.

Meredith said:

“Elara needs her mother’s family.”

Caleb agreed.

June had already worked for the Whitcombs before Hannah died. She became the stable center of Elara’s daily routine while Caleb tried to function through grief.

June knew feeding times.

Sleep patterns.

Which lullaby worked.

How Elara liked her bottle held.

Meredith knew Hannah.

At first, Caleb thought the combination was good for his daughter.

He never imagined the two women were moving toward a war he could not see.

Meredith began criticizing June quietly.

“She holds Elara too much.”

“She acts like she’s the mother.”

“Elara reaches for her before she reaches for me.”

Caleb dismissed it.

“June is her nanny.”

“That’s exactly my point.”

“What point?”

“You’re letting an employee become the most important woman in Hannah’s child’s life.”

Caleb thought it was grief talking.

So did June.

Neither understood how deep Meredith’s resentment had become.
