Chapter 7 - Meredith Wanted June Gone Before the Guardianship Hearing
The next piece came from Hannah’s estate attorney.
Caleb had forgotten about a clause in Hannah’s will.
Not because it was secret.
Because grief had reduced legal paperwork to noise.
Hannah named Caleb as Elara’s natural and legal parent, obviously.
But she also wrote a contingency.
If Caleb died, became incapacitated, or was found temporarily unable to care for Elara, Hannah requested that her sister Meredith be considered as guardian.
Not automatically appointed.
Considered.
That difference mattered.
Meredith had apparently begun treating the clause like a promise.
Then, after Hannah died, Caleb struggled badly for several months.
He missed work.
Forgot appointments.
Once fell asleep in his car in the driveway from exhaustion.
Nothing that made him an unfit father.
But Meredith started documenting everything.
She also began telling relatives:
“Caleb can’t do this without us.”
Then June became the problem.
Because June made Caleb’s household function.
June kept schedules.
Supported Elara.
Helped Caleb stabilize.
As long as June remained, Meredith could not plausibly argue that the household was collapsing.
So she began building a different argument.
Caleb hired an unsafe nanny.
Caleb failed to supervise her.
Elara was being endangered under his roof.
If something serious happened—
perhaps Hannah’s family could petition for temporary guardianship.
The iron was supposed to be the final proof.
A dramatic injury.
A panicked household.
A nanny blamed.
A father exposed as negligent.
