Chapter 10 - Caleb Learned Hannah Had Never Promised Meredith the Baby
The guardianship clause became Meredith’s emotional defense.
“Hannah wanted me to raise Elara.”
But that was not what Hannah wrote.
So Caleb requested the drafting notes from the estate lawyer.
They were preserved.
The lawyer had asked Hannah:
Why Meredith?
Hannah answered:
Because she’s my sister and I love her, but only if Caleb is genuinely unable to parent. I do not want anyone using this against him while he is alive and capable.
There was more.
Caleb is her father. I want that respected.
And one final note:
Meredith can become controlling when she thinks she is protecting people. Please make the language nonbinding.
Caleb read that sentence three times.
Hannah had seen the trait before anyone else.
Not abuse.
Not this.
But control disguised as protection.
That was why she deliberately made the guardianship language a preference rather than an appointment.
Meredith had spent months telling herself Hannah chose her.
In reality, Hannah had specifically limited Meredith’s power.
