Chapter 13 - Caleb Faced Consequences Too
Meredith’s conduct was far more serious.
That did not erase Caleb kicking June.
He cooperated fully when June’s attorney contacted him.
He covered her medical expenses immediately.
Then paid a negotiated civil settlement without forcing her to prove that being kicked into furniture while trying to save an infant had somehow damaged her enough to deserve compensation.
He also gave a written acknowledgment of what happened.
Not:
I’m sorry if you felt harmed.
Not:
I was protecting my daughter.
He wrote:
I struck you before determining what happened. You had just protected Elara. My fear and anger do not excuse what I did.
June read it privately.
Months later she told him:
“That was the first thing you did that made me think you actually understood.”
Caleb asked:
“Do you forgive me?”
June shook her head.
“Don’t make forgiveness another thing I have to give you.”
He never asked again.
Eventually forgiveness came anyway.
