Chapter 1 - The Watch Madeline Never Expected Me To Mention

Warm late-afternoon light poured through the enormous glass hangar windows of the Hale Aviation Museum, catching on suspended vintage aircraft and turning the polished stone floor almost gold.
The charity gala had not officially begun when Madeline Hale decided to make sure everyone nearby understood what she thought of me.
I was standing beside the silver champagne service cart in my black museum-event uniform and white apron when she stormed toward it.
She grabbed the upper edge with both hands.
Then flipped the entire cart onto its side.
Crystal glasses and empty serving trays crashed across the floor.
She turned toward me immediately.
“PICK IT UP! THAT’S ALL YOU’RE GOOD FOR!”
I stared at her.
Humiliated.
Angry.
But still controlled.
“I’M NOT YOUR SERVANT, MADELINE.”
She stepped closer until there were only inches between us.
“YOUR FATHER LEFT YOU NOTHING. REMEMBER THAT.”
That was the line that changed my face.
Not because she had never said cruel things about my father before.
Because she always seemed to know exactly which part of his death still hurt most.
Madeline raised her right hand and swung toward my face.
I ducked.
Caught her wrist.
Then used the momentum she had already created. I pivoted, redirected her weight, and executed one controlled hip throw.
Madeline flipped over my side and landed hard but safely on the polished floor.
I released her immediately and stepped back.
No second strike.
No kick.
Nothing else.
At that exact moment, footsteps came fast down the grand curved staircase.
Ryan appeared first.
My uncle.
Madeline’s husband.
My grandfather Charles was directly behind him.
They both froze when they saw Madeline on the floor.
She pointed at me from where she had fallen.
“SHE ATTACKED ME!”
Ryan looked stunned.
I stayed several feet away.
“SHE TRIED TO HIT ME FIRST.”
Grandpa stepped closer.
He looked from me to Madeline, then back again.
“WHY WOULD MADELINE START THIS OVER YOUR FATHER?”
For half a second, I couldn’t speak.
Then I looked past him toward Madeline.
Her anger began to disappear.
I met my grandfather’s eyes.
“THEN ASK HER WHY DAD’S WATCH WAS IN HER HOTEL ROOM THE NIGHT HE DIED.”
Grandpa stopped breathing.
Ryan slowly turned toward his wife.

And for the first time since I had known her, Madeline looked afraid.
