He explained that several foundation staff told him the questionable amounts were small and recoverable. Madeline promised the consulting classifications would be cleaned up. Ryan knew nothing about the lender presentation, so Grandpa assumed the deeper conflict had died with Michael.

It was a terrible assumption.

One made from grief, arrogance, and the belief that family leaders can decide when truth becomes inconvenient.

“What would Dad have wanted?” I asked.

Grandpa looked at Michael’s photograph on the wall.

“The review.”

“Then why didn’t you give him that?”

He had no answer that made him look good.

So he gave me the honest one.

“Because I was tired.”
