Chapter 11 - Ryan Finally Saw His Marriage Clearly
Ryan confronted Madeline privately with attorneys present.
He did not scream.
That frightened her more.
He placed three things on the table.
The old MB Aviation Lifestyle lender presentation.
The hotel records.
The housekeeping entry about Dad’s watch.
“Did you use my name without permission?”
Madeline tried to explain context.
Ryan repeated the question.
“Yes.”
“Did Michael confront you?”
“Yes.”
“Did you lie to me about where you were that night?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know his watch was in your room?”
A longer silence.
“Yes.”
Ryan leaned back.
Then he asked the question that broke something permanently.
“When my brother died, were you more afraid for him or for yourself?”
Madeline began crying.
That was answer enough.
She said she had been terrified.
She said she expected Dad to tell Ryan everything the next morning.
Then Dad died.
For a few hours she felt grief.
Then relief.
She hated admitting that.
But she did.
Relief meant the secret might survive.
That emotional truth was worse for Ryan than the financial misconduct.
His brother died.
And part of his wife had seen death as protection.
