Chapter 8 - What Madeline Had Been Hiding From Ryan

The answer was financial.
Not romantic.
That surprised all of us.
Madeline had used Ryan’s name and his credibility with a private aircraft-leasing firm to support an outside investment she had no authority to make.
Two years earlier, she formed a luxury travel consultancy called MB Aviation Lifestyle.
On paper, it arranged bespoke travel experiences for wealthy clients.
In practice, it struggled.
Madeline borrowed heavily.
Then she began using her connection to the Hale Foundation to make the company look larger and more established than it was.
She routed some legitimate foundation hospitality work through MB.
Then inflated several invoices.
Worse, she represented to one lender that Ryan was financially backing the company.
He wasn’t.
His name appeared in an internal presentation as an “informal guarantor and strategic partner.”
He had never agreed to that.
Dad discovered the presentation.
That was what he meant at the hotel bar.
You used Ryan’s name to hide it.
Madeline was terrified because exposing the scheme would do three things at once.
Damage her company.
Humiliate Ryan professionally.
And prove Dad had been right about her from the beginning.
She called Dad privately during the donor dinner and asked him to meet.
She chose Room 612 because she did not want Ryan or Grandpa seeing them argue in public.
Dad went.
He confronted her.
According to what we eventually reconstructed, Madeline begged him for time.
Dad refused.
He told her she had until morning to tell Ryan herself.
The bent watch clasp happened during that argument.
Not because they were fighting physically.
Because Dad removed the watch after catching it against the edge of a luggage rack.
He apparently set it on the bedside cabinet.
Then left without it.
Madeline found it later.
May you like
And kept quiet.
