Chapter 9 - Why Didn’t Madeline Return The Watch?
That became the question Grandpa cared about most.
If the watch was innocent, why not return it after Dad died?
Madeline’s first explanation was that she never saw it.
The renovation discovery made that possible in theory. The watch was found behind fixed cabinetry. Maybe it fell before she noticed.
Then hotel housekeeping records surfaced.
A room attendant had logged:
Metal watch found near bedside—guest requested leave in room.
The entry was brief.
But it destroyed Madeline’s denial.
She knew the watch was there.
She deliberately left it.
Her explanation changed.
She said she panicked after learning Dad died.
Returning the watch would force her to admit they had met privately.
That would expose the argument.
Which would expose her company.
Which would expose what she had done with Ryan’s name.
So she left the watch behind and checked out.
She assumed housekeeping would send it to lost property.
When nobody contacted her, she said she convinced herself the problem had disappeared.
It had not disappeared.
It had slipped behind furniture.
