Chapter 4 - Dad And Madeline Had Been Fighting Before He Died
Once Grandpa heard about Room 612, he stopped treating the watch like a strange coincidence.
He called me into his office the morning after the gala confrontation and asked one question.
“Did your father ever tell you he distrusted Madeline?”
I laughed without humor.
“Dad distrusted half the people Ryan dated.”
“No. Specifically Madeline.”
I thought about it.
There had been tension.
But families are full of tension that only becomes meaningful after tragedy.
Dad thought Madeline cared too much about appearances.
Madeline thought Dad treated Ryan like the lesser son.
That was not entirely invented.
Michael had been the eldest.
The pilot.
The charismatic fundraiser.
The one Grandpa trained from childhood to understand the foundation.
Ryan was quieter and went into aircraft-leasing finance instead.
For years, people compared them.
Madeline hated that.
She believed the foundation treated her husband like a backup heir.
And after she married Ryan, she began pushing him to demand more authority.
Dad resisted.
Not because he wanted to keep everything.
Because Madeline kept proposing arrangements he thought blurred the line between family money and foundation money.
Three months before his death, Dad discovered that several donor-flight expenses had been reimbursed through a consulting company Madeline controlled.
The amounts were not enormous.
Just unusual.
Private-car invoices.
Luxury hotel upgrades.
“Strategic hospitality” fees.
A short-term aircraft charter benefiting one of Madeline’s friends.
Dad challenged them.
Madeline called him obsessive.
Ryan called it bookkeeping noise.
Grandpa told everyone to calm down.
Dad didn’t.
He requested an independent expense review.
That review was scheduled for the week after the Palm Springs donor event.
He died before it happened.
Afterward, the review quietly disappeared.
And Madeline’s involvement in foundation events expanded.
For five years, none of us connected those facts.
