Chapter 6 - Ryan Had No Idea His Wife Had A Separate Hotel Room

Ryan’s reaction to the hotel record was almost harder to watch than Grandpa’s.
He sat across from me in the foundation conference room, staring at the printout.
“Room 612?”
“Yes.”
“She was supposed to be staying at the guest house.”
“I know.”
“She told me she went back there after the donor dinner.”
Grandpa asked quietly, “Were you with her?”
“No. I was at the leasing conference hotel by the airport.”
Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.
Then asked me the question he clearly hated.
“Do you think she was sleeping with Michael?”
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.”
That was important.
A watch in a hotel room can suggest many things.
An affair.
A confrontation.
An accident.
Someone carrying an object later.
We did not yet have the right to pick the most dramatic answer.
So we went looking for records.
The Mirador still retained old guest-entry logs because of its executive-floor security system.
Room 612 had registered key entries at 8:14 p.m., 10:47 p.m., and 12:16 a.m.
The donor dinner ended around 10:30.
Dad’s phone records showed his device left the museum area shortly afterward.
Then came another clue.
A valet transaction from the Mirador showed Dad’s rental SUV entering the property at 10:53.
The car left at 11:38.
Dad was found in the garage around midnight.
He had definitely gone to the hotel.
The question was no longer whether he had been there.

It was why he went to Madeline’s room.
