Chapter 1 - The Direction Vanessa Never Expected Me To Point

Warm afternoon light flooded the upper gallery of the Colorado mountain estate, stretching across dark timber floors and the black iron balcony railing above the bright lower foyer.

Emma Bennett stood beside her eight-year-old son, Noah.

Neither of them saw Vanessa coming from behind.

She moved fast.

One second Noah was beside his mother.

The next Vanessa had both arms around his upper torso.

Her face was twisted with something far beyond ordinary anger.

“IF I CAN’T HAVE DANIEL, YOU DON’T GET TO KEEP HIS FAMILY!”

Emma barely had time to understand the words.

Vanessa lifted Noah and sent him over the balcony railing in one brutal, decisive motion.

“No!”

Noah disappeared beyond the railing toward the broad lower safety level built beneath the gallery.

Emma screamed.

“NOAH!”

She ran toward the railing.

She reached desperately forward, trying to see where her son had landed. Then, while turning toward the nearby staircase, her shoe slipped against the edge of the first step.

Emma lost her balance.

She tumbled down several stairs in one continuous fall, struck the lower landing hard enough to knock the breath out of herself, and curled instinctively around one arm.

No blood.

No serious visible injury.

Only terror.

Above her, Vanessa remained at the gallery railing.

Then the large lower entrance doors opened.

Daniel Bennett ran into the foyer carrying Noah securely in both arms.

Noah was conscious.

Crying.

Terrified.

But safe.

Daniel had been approaching through the lower drive when Noah dropped onto the broad architectural safety terrace outside the lower foyer. He had heard the scream, reached him immediately, and carried him inside.

Then he saw Emma on the landing.

“EMMA!”

Daniel ran straight toward her.

Emma pushed herself upright and reached for Noah.

Daniel carefully transferred their son into her arms.

Emma wrapped both arms around him and held him against her chest.

“Mom,” Noah sobbed.

“I’ve got you.”

Daniel stood beside them.

For one second relief filled his face.

Then he looked upward.

Vanessa stood alone on the gallery.

Daniel’s expression went cold.

Vanessa saw it.

Her face changed instantly.

The woman who had just screamed about taking Daniel’s family disappeared.

In her place came frightened innocence.

She lifted both hands.

“I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING!”

Daniel said nothing.

He simply stared at her.

Emma looked up too.

She was shaking.

Then something entered her mind.

Something Vanessa had forgotten.

Emma raised one trembling hand.

And pointed.

Not at Vanessa.

Past her.

Toward one particular direction above the gallery.

Daniel followed her finger.

Vanessa did too.

Her fake confusion disappeared instantly.

The color drained from her face.

Her eyes widened.

And for the first time that afternoon, Vanessa looked truly afraid.
