Chapter 5 - Noah Had Already Started Avoiding Vanessa
Children often understand danger before adults understand motive.
Noah never accused Vanessa of anything dramatic.
He simply stopped wanting to be alone with her.
At first Emma thought it was because Vanessa treated him like a much younger child. She corrected his posture, told him not to interrupt adults, and complained that Daniel spoiled him.
Then Noah started asking specific questions.
“Is Cousin Vanessa staying overnight?”
“Are you going downstairs too?”
“Can I come with you if Dad goes outside?”
Emma noticed.
Daniel did not, at least not immediately.
One evening Noah refused to go into the upstairs media room because Vanessa was there alone.
Daniel asked why.
Noah shrugged.
“She says weird stuff.”
“What kind of weird stuff?”
Another shrug.
Emma sat beside him.
“Tell us.”
Noah looked embarrassed.
“She says Dad would have more fun if it was just him and her.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“When did she say that?”
“A lot.”
Emma looked at her husband.
Noah continued.
“She said before Mom came, Dad liked her best.”
Daniel actually laughed from discomfort.
“That’s not true.”
Noah nodded.
“I told her.”
“What did she say?”
“She said I don’t know everything about grown-ups.”
That was the first time Daniel directly confronted Vanessa.
She denied saying it.
Then cried.
Then accused Emma of feeding Noah ideas because Emma had always disliked her.
Daniel told her she needed to leave the estate for a while.
For three weeks, Vanessa stayed away.
Then Daniel’s aunt—Vanessa’s mother—called.
She said Vanessa was devastated by being “cut off from family” over something a child misunderstood.
Daniel softened.
That decision would become one of the hardest things for him to forgive in himself.
He let Vanessa return.
Not to stay indefinitely.
Just for a family weekend.
Just to restore peace.
Just to avoid making a permanent accusation without permanent proof.
Adults use “just” when they want a dangerous compromise to sound temporary.
