Chapter 6 - The Recording Did Not Leave Room For Misunderstanding

The estate security officer played the footage in Daniel’s study while a sheriff’s deputy stood beside him.

Emma remained upstairs with Noah and a medic.

Daniel watched alone.

The video had no dramatic soundtrack.

No cinematic angle.

Only a fixed recording of the gallery.

That made it worse.

Emma and Noah appeared near the railing.

Vanessa entered from behind.

She accelerated.

Grabbed Noah.

Then the audio captured her clearly.

“If I can’t have Daniel, you don’t get to keep his family!”

Daniel stopped breathing.

The next seconds were exactly what Emma described.

Vanessa lifted Noah.

Sent him over the railing.

Emma ran.

Fell down the stairs.

Then Vanessa moved to the railing and looked downward.

For approximately two seconds she did nothing.

No attempt to descend.

No scream for help.

No call to emergency services.

She simply looked.

Then she stepped backward.

The deputy paused the recording.

Daniel looked at him.

“Play it.”

The deputy did.

Daniel watched himself enter the lower foyer carrying Noah.

Watched Emma receive their son.

Watched Vanessa raise her hands.

Then heard:

“I didn’t do anything!”

The deputy stopped the footage again.

No one spoke for a moment.

Finally Daniel asked:

“What happens now?”

The answer was not dramatic.

“We preserve this. Interview everyone separately. Make sure the child and your wife are medically cleared. Then the district attorney reviews appropriate charges.”

Daniel nodded.

“Is she leaving?”

“She is not leaving with you.”

For the first time all afternoon, Daniel felt something resembling relief.

Not satisfaction.

Not vengeance.

Only the relief of knowing he would no longer have to persuade anyone that his own family member was dangerous.

The camera had done what he had failed to do early enough.

It believed Emma immediately.
